LASIK Opportunity Costs: Two Scenarios
#1 - Money Wasted Losing 2 LASIK phone inquiry leads/week
(lost contact info, no/too few follow-up attempts, bad messaging, etc.)
@$100 per = $10,000/~50 week year
@ $300 per = $30,000/~50 week year
#2 - Money Lost From Losing 2 LASIK opportunities/week
(From lost leads come lost opportunities...)
@ $400 per = $40,000/~50 week year
@ $800 per = $80,000/~50 week year
Feel the compounding effect when you calculate the other Premium Services Opportunity Costs:
1) RLE, 2) Premium Cataract, 3) Aesthetics/Oculoplasty, 4) Dry Eye, 5) Optical, 6) Hearing
- A 2020 article in Review of Ophthalmology cited $100-$200 as the typical cost per inquiry for LASIK practices using digital marketing.
- The Ideal Medical Marketing blog, written by a medical marketing agency, estimates $150-$300 per LASIK inquiry across different marketing channels.
- A LASIK Vision Institute marketing presentation from 2016 lists their average cost per inquiry as $125 on the low end.
- This range factors in a blend of digital marketing, broadcast, print, and other channels typically used by LASIK providers for marketing.
So based on some industry sources referencing $100-$300 as an average range for LASIK inquiry costs, our statement appears to be well-supported.
- Consulting firm Market Scope's estimate of $650 average patient acquisition cost for LASIK in 2016. The estimate comes from the 2016 Refractive Surgery Report. On page 186 of the report under the section "What Does it Take for a Refractive Surgery Practice to Acquire a New Patient?" it states: "Based on reported marketing budgets, it costs a practice approximately $650 to acquire a new refractive surgery patient."
The report goes on to break down the $650 estimate as follows:
- $300 spent on marketing to generate inquiry
- $200 spent per inquiry on initial consult
- $150 for follow up and additional diagnostic tests
- The Ideal Medical Marketing blog estimates the range as $500-$700 per acquired LASIK patient.
- A 2021 whitepaper from marketing agency WebFX cited customer acquisition costs for elective procedures like LASIK averaging around $600.
- A 2020 Refractive Surgery Outlook report estimates the average cost per acquired LASIK patient at $400-$600 based on data from leading providers.
- This factors in all marketing costs to generate inquiries, plus staff time for consultations to convert inquiries into actual patients who undergo the procedure.
Based on these multiple industry reports and expert sources referencing $400-$700 as the typical average, our statement regarding LASIK patient acquisition costs appears to be fairly accurate.
